Northern Historic Route with Tigray cave churches – 7 days

Northern Tigray offers one of the most spectacular trekking experiences in Ethiopia. Hike along sandstone ridges with panoramic views of the Gheralta Valley, where every step is a journey back through time. The region is home to breathtaking rock-hewn churches, some dating as far back as the 4th century—with Abuna Yemata Guh and Maryam Korkor being two of the most awe-inspiring and dramatic to reach.

For those seeking an added challenge, a rope ascent leads to the Debre Damo Monastery—perched high on a flat mountain top and open only to men, due to its ancient monastic rules. The view from the summit is truly unforgettable.

Along the way, you’ll pass through age-old farming communities and witness the presence of gelada baboons and raptors soaring overhead. The serenity, raw beauty, and spiritual energy of Tigray will leave you deeply moved.

Note: Some climbs involve narrow ledges and vertical ascents. Travelers with vertigo or limited mobility may prefer alternate historical sites on our Northern tours.
