Main Attractions

This unforgettable journey takes you across scorched salt pans, past fluorescent hot springs, and up to the crater rim of the Erta Ale volcano, home to one of the few persistent lava lakes on Earth. Watch Afar nomads mine salt blocks from Lake Asale and witness camel caravans carrying them across the desert—an ancient tradition still alive today.

01

Erta Ale Volcano

Often called the “Smoking Mountain,” Erta Ale is one of the few places on Earth where you can stand near an active lava lake. Its glowing, restless surface bubbles and cracks beneath your feet as if you’re peering into the Earth’s fiery core. The trek to the crater—especially under the stars—is as dramatic as the volcano itself.

02

Dallol Hydrothermal Field

This colorful, acidic wonderland is unlike anything else on Earth. Dallol’s cinder cone volcano has created a vibrant terrain of neon greens, reds, and yellows across bubbling pools and salt mounds. The air is thick with minerals and heat, making every step feel like a walk through a sci-fi film set.

03

Lake Asale

This salt-encrusted lake gleams under the desert sun, offering stunning sunset reflections across its glassy surface. The lake is also where Afar miners extract salt, cutting rectangular slabs by hand in a ritual unchanged for centuries. The stark beauty of the white plains against the endless sky is unforgettable.

04

Lake Afrera

A hypersaline lake surrounded by steaming hot springs and salt flats. Thanks to its high salt content, you’ll float effortlessly—much like in the Dead Sea. Remote and still, Lake Afrera is a tranquil contrast to the fiery violence of nearby volcanoes.

05

Salt Pans & Mining Traditions

Each day, under the fierce heat, Afar workers extract salt from the hardened desert floor using basic tools and age-old techniques. The salt bricks are then loaded onto camels, forming long caravans that march off toward distant markets. Witnessing this living tradition is both humbling and captivating.

06

Camel Caravans

Timeless silhouettes of camels stretch across the glowing desert horizon as they transport salt to the highlands. The rhythmic plod of hooves and the quiet resolve of the Afar herders speak volumes about endurance and survival in one of the world’s harshest environments.
